Until Your Return

I’m milking this lonesome feeling
for all its poetic worth,
missing you even before you turn & walk away,
even before I fall in line behind you
to lock the door against outside intrusion

Observing your departure
left to analyze the purpose of a long life
setting my mind in gear
daring me to cross the yellow line
raising the bar on satisfaction
courting the flame of desire
playing my cards with excess caution
to get down to the bottom line
where we must affix a signature
accepting the terms of foul play
